Maple & Oak - Heart Dissection Letter

7 September 2018 (by Jodie Binch (Jbinch))

Year 6 will be launching this half-term with a science week. We will be learning about the importance of the heart and how it functions.

As part of science week, we would like to welcome you into school to take part in a dissecting a sheep’s heart, with your child, on Thursday the 13th September from 9.15 am until 10.05am. We will be examining how the different chambers of the heart pump blood around our body. You are more than welcome to watch or take part with your child. The dissection will be led by Mr. Webster (the teacher in Maple Class) who will lead you through the dissection step by step. The dissection will follow the policies and procedures set out by CLEAPSS (Primary). However, if you wish for your child to not participate then please inform the class teacher. The hearts are washed prior to the dissection, however it is possible that some blood may leak from the heart during the dissection.

Our learning for the remainder of the half-term will then take us on a journey to explore the role of exercise in keeping the heart healthy, the components of the blood, the circulatory system and a whole lot more.

We really hope you are able to join us on Thursday 13th September to celebrate science week and the launch of our topic. If you have any questions, feel free to come and speak to Mr Webster.

Many thanks,

The Year 6 Team

Mr Webster (Maple), Mrs Fiddimore and Mrs McDonald (Oak), Mr Clayton and Ms Hallam.
